May Spayathon in Romania Huge Success

Romania Animal Rescue’s May spayathon was huge success covering multiple cities in only two weeks. Although the organization holds spay and neuter events across Romania throughout the year, May is their special month to make a difference in the lives of Romania’s stray cats and dogs.

Founded in 2003 by Nancy Janes of Livermore, CA, (see previous IPE post, American woman creates animal spay/neuter organization in Romania), Romania Animal Rescue (RAR) has performed almost 14,000 spay and neuter surgeries. In a country where dogs and cats roamed the streets unchecked for decades, this number is an enormous accomplishment.

According to RAR veterinarian, Dr. Aurelian Stefan, the organization traveled to eight cities and moved all of their surgical equipment over 800 miles.

“It is a great feeling to be able to help people that do not want to see any more litters from the stray dogs around their blocks...” he said.

Janes reported that from May 2011 to May 2012 RAR performed 5000 surgeries. For the May 2012 event 675 free spays and neuters were performed. Along with the spay/neuter surgeries, Janes added that over 4000 educational booklets were delivered to local school children to teach them compassion for animals and the importance of sterilizing pets.
