More Than Spay/Neuter »

Sharing educational booklets

Before the industrialization wave that swept Romania in the 1960s, Romania was an agrarian society. Their farms depended upon animals that were healthy and well taken care of. It is a tradition that had found equilibrium between humans and the their environment. Unfortunately a side effect from the industrialization of the country brought a concentrated number of dogs together, and their population exponentially multiplied.

For 11 years, Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. (RAR) has advocated the humane benefits of spay/neuter to reduce the number of un-adopted animals that get discarded to the streets. We have developed a combination of four campaigns: Spay/Neuter with Animal Spay/Neuter International, Animal Care with Homeless Animal Hospital, Veterinary Training with Veterinary Training Camp, and Education Booklets with Mayhew International. These campaigns work together to educate communities and provide the means for effecting humane change.

Combined Federal Campaign

The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) promotes and supports philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.

The CFC today is known to be the most inclusive workplace giving campaign in the world with the number of participating charities estimated at over 20,000 nonprofit charitable organizations worldwide. Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. DBA Animal Spay/Neuter International is proud to be one of those charities that the CFC sponsors.

Best in America--Independent Charities of America

The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded to the members of Independent Charities of America and Local Independent Charities of America that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, and program and cost effectiveness. These standards include those required by the US Government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, probably the most exclusive fund drive in the world. Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000, or 5%, meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this Seal.

Spay/neuter is more than a sterilization procedure. It is a promise to the animals that surround us that we care for their well-being. Each guardian who brings their animal(s) to a Romania Animal Rescue spayathon tells their community that they choose the humane path. That decision is infectious, as they tell their neighbors how this simple procedure does more to prevent overpopulation than "euthanasia" initiatives.

RAR started helping just two towns, Braila and Galati, but with the support of individual donors have expanded that aid to nearly 60 towns. We cannot overcome 50 years of animal population explosion alone. We need the financial support of our donors, and local Romanian communities that are willing to try a new approach, a better approach to caring for their animals.

To fix any problem, we must address the cause, not just the symptoms. Animal spay/neuter stops overpopulation at the source.

Dear Romania Animal Supporters »

Dear RAR and ASNI Friends,

June was one of the busiest months ever for our work in Romania. At times three simultaneous campaigns were running for free spay/neuter! This outstanding charity is able to reach so many animals and help them. The Dream Team has made this a true dream come true!

With this comes more work, as more and more people learn of Romania Animal Rescue, more requests for help come in, from all corners of the country. We try to never refuse help. I hope that with your continued support we can maintain and expand the great work we have been able to provide.

Thank you with all my heart!
Nancy Janes

Ramnicu Sarat Loves Their Cats (and Dogs)

Dear Friends,

June is officially a summer month here and the RAR Dream Team managed to operate on close to 1000 animals, which takes us close to 27,000 surgeries in total. All this with your help! June was the month we helped in Harsova and in Bistrita and I started getting involved in a Triathlon challenge to promote the cause of so many animals in need and for the main solution: Spaying and neutering! I decided to continue running for the animals and spread the word about our wonderful work. We decided to have our first ever Spay Day at the seaside to provide spay and neuter for the dogs wondering the beaches in Ararch for food and water. We will work towards reducing thirst and misery right where it starts--with the unwanted litters! Come join us in our tireless effort to help in all the places we have been requested to come and we shall go there where no one has gone before--the remotest parts of the country from seaside to the western border. We are so happy that you support our work and that you are generating so much difference in people's minds and soul!

God bless you!

Dr. Triathlon

Dr. A at the Triathlon Dr. A at the Triathlon

Dr. Aurelian Stefan exchanged his scalpel for neoprene in Mangalia, Romania's triathlon last weekend. Thank you, Dr. A, for raising spay/neuter and homeless animal care awareness by participating in such a challenging race. The following is Dr. A's account of how he got involved in the race.

RAR received a cry for help to do a spayathon in Mangalia a small city in Romania by the Black Sea. While I was talking with the city officials I found out that they are hosting a Triathlon event. I am no athlete but I thought it was a good moment to promote the spay and neuter cause and to raise funds towards the poor animals we treat in our Homeless Animal Hospital project.

We are glad you swam, cycled, and ran your way to the finish line in under two hours, all to promote spay/neuter and animal care. Dr. Aurelian's participation has raised €921.50 Euro, £45.50 pounds, $1150.00 for Romania Animal Rescue and Homeless Animal Hospital.

Bistrita Spayathon

Ruth Osborne in Bistrita Bistrita Guardian

Thank you RAR donors, Maz, and Sue Roberts for funding this immense campaign! Thank you to the best people I know who work tirelessly and endlessly to help the animals by traveling to locations hours or days away and providing excellent skilled surgeries for one reason: To stop the suffering of unwanted animals! Bless YOU Dream Team!

Pictured above is Ruth Osborne, herding cats, a mother with one of her puppies, and a man who came to our spayathon because he was tired of killing puppies that could not be homed. Not only is spay/neuter healthier for the animals, it is better for the human psyche!

Suplac

Suplac Spayathon Suplac Spayathon

Let's welcome Suplac to our growing number of towns that choose to spay/neuter their pets to lower the stray animal population. Suplac is a peasant village, located in the historic Transylvania region of Romania. Suplac has no vets and no access to help. With RAR's free spay/neuter program and our Homeless Animals Hospital, we can help more animals.

Spay Packs

Spay Pack

Our spay packs are getting dull from so much use. Spay packs are a collection of forceps, scissors, hemostats, and other surgical instruments needed to spay animals. They cost about €185/£150/$250 each, but with good sterilization techniques we can make them last several years. We are taking up a collection to purchase 50 new spay packs. Any amount you can contribute will help us continue to spay/neuter animals that minimizes their discomfort.

Animal Care »

Homeless Animal Hospital provides animal care to street animals. Often, they are survivors of car accidents, emaciated, or infested with parasites.

A worker from a local animal charity had found this dog in Bucharest. He brought it to Homeless Animal Hospital for immediate treatment. The dog, Haiduc, is gaining both strength and weight since the surgery.

The Romanian shepherd dog is generally seen as a proud symbol of this country. But in fact their fate is too often very sad. We found this one in a terrible state, completely exhausted, waiting for the end in the grass. At the vet the examination showed an otitis with a terribly inflamed ear, with puss draining from the ear on the neck. In the hot summer day the flies laid their eggs and soon the maggots started their destructive work. This time death was narrowly avoided. This dog that now weighs only 18 kilograms while his normal weight should be around 50 still has hope for a new life. We called him Haiduc (Outlaw).

Timmy

Timmy Timmy

Timmy was brought into the Homeless Animals Hospital program in Bucharest for treatment. As you can see, he lost the use of his leg and has been dragging it. We knew something had to be done as soon as possible so that he will not get infections, flies and maggot infestation. Timmy will undergo amputation of this leg as he cannot use it. He also has been diagnosed with heart worms, and we will treat for this as well. Timmy will also be up for adoption.
