Animal Spay/Neuter International Is Going to The Dominican Republic »
Animal Spay/Neuter International (ASNI) is going to the Dominican Republic next week to spay/neuter 600 stray dogs. The Dominican Republic is one of the poorest countries in the world. Please help ASNI's Dominican Republic Spayathon by visiting the ASNI website and supporting this campaign.
Combined Federal Campaign
Best in America
The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) promotes and supports philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.
The CFC today is known to be the most inclusive workplace giving campaign in the world with the number of participating charities estimated at over 20,000 nonprofit charitable organizations worldwide. Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. DBA Animal Spay/Neuter International is proud to be one of those charities that the CFC sponsors.
The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded to the members of Independent Charities of America and Local Independent Charities of America that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, and program and cost effectiveness. These standards include those required by the US Government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, probably the most exclusive fund drive in the world. Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000, or 5%, meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this Seal.
Dedication to Anna and Fenzi.
Dr. Bachman's daughter, Anna, passed away in a tragic accident on January 13. She was 25. She was an outgoing person who loved life and never had a bad word about anyone. The Bachman family and Anna's friends are still in shock over this terrible loss. Our condolences and heartfelt sympathy go out to all who knew Anna. The world has lost an angel.
Fenzi, beloved dog of Frannie and Jan, passed away on Christmas Eve.
"Fenzi was a female purebred German Shepherd, who came to live with us with Kiki, a champagne colored terrier, from our neighbor Joe's across the street, about eight years ago. She was a beautiful being, we thank her for gracing our lives. She died on Christmas Eve at 11:00 pm, we are honored to have been with her as she left us."
Dear Romania Animal Supporters »
Dear ASNI/RAR Friends and Supporters,
As winter has set in with snow and freezing temperatures in Romania, we are thankful for the over 23,000 animals that we have been able to spay/neuter thanks to you support. These animals are not reproducing and having their puppies abandoned onto the streets or dumped into shelters to live a life of misery and suffering. This number of spays/neuters prevented millions of additional pups and kittens from being born into a world that does not want them. Thank you with all our hearts for your support and continued commitment to help them.
Our excellent and ongoing help in Romania has expanded to other impoverished regions of the world as well. Our sister charity, Animal Spay Neuter International, made its debut a couple years ago when we were able to fund the travel of the RAR Dream Team of vets to Greece. Now we have expanded our international program by providing spay/neuter help and services in a number of countries, including, Romania, Greece, Panama, Suriname, Portugal, for impoverished people in the USA, and a small donation of funds to India. In February, along with our continual help in Craiova, Tecuci and Moreni, Romania, we will be sending the ASNI Dream Team to the Dominican Republic to provide up to 600 free spays/neuters in that country.
Thank you for your help. Thank you for understanding that spay/neuter, vet care, veterinary education, and educational campaigns for the young and old are vital to helping the animals. As our charity and our outreach grows, we hope for your support.
Bless you and have a wonderful New Year! Nancy Janes
Thanks to your support, we have been able to start the year with an outstanding number of more than 600 spay and neuter surgeries helping people in need of spay and neuter for their animals in both impoverished Romania and Portugal.
A few months ago I was telling you about the harshest winter in the last 50 years and now we experience heavy snowfall followed by extreme cold temperatures of arctic origins. This extreme weather hits those young pups that are dumped and those that are born on the streets, leaving them little chance of survival. The best way to prevent such misery and pain is by spaying and neutering, which is the most efficient life-saving tool we have.
Thanks to you, countless pups will not wander the streets exposed to the harshest living conditions of the cold winter. Animals count on your help to provide them the most basic comfort: Not being hungry, thirsty, cold and the despair of having no future one day to the next. Thank you for your support in our quest for providing a safe future for the dogs and cats through spay and neuter. God bless you!

We would like to welcome Suceava to our growing number of towns we have helped.
Your support has brought us to each of these towns for one or more of our animal welfare services: Spay/neuter, school education, veterinarian training, veterinary care, adoption, and shelter support.

Spay/Neuter Update »
This cat was adopted at the event.
These cats were brought in by their owners and/or protectors to be fixed and then they are taken home to recuperate. Cold winter weather does not permit stray cats to be returned back to the streets. They need more time to be safe and well. Many thanks to RAR donors who support our work in Iasi! Romania Animal Rescue is the only charity that is providing free spay/neuter for cats in Iasi, Romania's second largest city. Please help us to spay/neuter more cats in Iasi to keep kittens from ending up on the streets.
Our anonymous donor provided Heartgard to prevent heartworm. What a relief!
Our first visit to Suceava was a success!
ASNI Spayathon in Portugal
Considering the fact that there are approximately 600 million homeless dogs in this world at any given time, it's obvious that animal rescue in the form of shelters and adoptions never will solve the problem. What needs to be done to even start addressing the problem, is to stop the endless flow of puppy litters. If an unspayed female has two litters of 5-10 puppies a year, and then those puppies, those that survive, have the same, and then their puppies and their puppies again.... You don't have to be a genius to understand that by spaying only one animal hundreds of lives have been spared the suffering and pain that is the life of a stray dog.
I have volunteered at two spay events by ASNI/RAR, Romania in 2012 and Portugal in 2014, and have seen some great things happening. First of all, the veterinaries are incredibly good, they are so fast, precise and efficient that they operate up to 100 animals a day in these events (2 veterinaries + 2 vet techs). That's literally thousands of puppies who will not be born to suffer and die on the cruel streets of Romania and Portugal (and everywhere else the ASNI vet team perform their magic). The cost is approximately 25 dollars per spayed animal. Comparing that to the cost of rescuing one animal and preparing it for adoption and then flying it to the other side of the continent, it is clear that since funds are always limited, focus should be on s/n and not adoptions for those of us who wish to do something about the stray dog problem of the world.
In addition to performing the actual castrations, the vet team also help people with other issues they might have with their dogs and cats and educate them on how to best take care of their animals. The events also have a social function; the local animal lovers come in with their animals and meet other animal lovers and have a chat and a coffee and share information and encourage each other. Some of them might also bring a reluctant neighbour or colleague and their animal. ASNI's spay events bring positive energy and excitement to the local community, people are amazed at the skills and efficiency of the vet team and those who initially were reluctant and uninterested might actually change their attitudes. I've seen this happening and it's just so awesome and so encouraging. Thus the local animal lovers get more supporters and help to carry out their work even after the vet team has left. With more support and fewer puppies to rescue, the local charities have more time and resources to work on information, education and changing attitudes in their communities, and maybe in the long run even push for better legislation to protect their animals. More supporters locally as well as the support of the ASNI dream team is also a great help to prevent the all too common syndrome of "animal rescuer burn out".
ASNI can only do their work if they have sufficient funds and are completely reliant on our contributions. I urge everybody who would like to help the strays of the world to help ASNI performing their magic by donating to them. Thank you.

Where Do We Go from Here?
We bring spay/neuter to dozens of cities and towns in Romania each year, and we will continue to do so. ONLY spay/neuter will prevent animals from being born to face abandonment, suffering and killing.
We are planning to return to Tecuci and Moreni in February, and we now will have an ongoing spay/neuter campaign in Craiova for 150 animals, thanks to a generous donation from our friend Suzy and from the Spreading the Love campaign! In the Spring, RAR hopes to raise funds to return to Bistrita and Buhusi to continue our free spay/neuter and veterinary care services. With your donation, we can do this!
In December and January, RAR donated $1575 for food purchases to feed shelter and foster care dogs, helped to fund the treatment for a distemper dog, and funded the cost of X-rays, treatment, and neutering of a dog with a dislocated knee.
Our friends from Germany asked RAR if we could please give them 100 educational booklets to take to Sighet, Romania. We were pleased to share books with them. These booklets teach children how to take good care of their pets.
$1.79 will fund the cost of printing one book--and the benefits are priceless!
Thank you, Ruth Osborne, for putting this ad together. Toby had a broken front leg at about 14 weeks old. Although the bone healed, the ligaments in the other front leg are stretched and not as tight as they should be. He is now under the care of Speranta Pentru Animale Craiova.
Hi, I'm Toby from Romania
To get me into a nice new home and off the street can cost around US$800 (€500, £500), which doesn't even include the vet fees for repairing my broken leg!
For this amount, Romania Animal Rescue can spay 37 females, which means after 1 year, 576 puppies can be saved from suffering like I have.
Thank you to our fabulous donors who have made all this work possible in Romania with Romania Animal Rescue and internationally with Animal Spay Neuter International. As the demand and need for our tremendous service expands, we hope that you will be with us and continue to help promote our spay/neuters, veterinary trainings, veterinary treatments, and educational programs. The animals are counting on us all. Thank you, dear donors!
Thank you, Dr. Richard Bachman, for supplies and World Vets Services, UK, for supplies.
Thank you, Sterilize Dogs NL, for your unwavering support of spay/neuter.
"Spreading the Love" event on Facebook raised enough funds to provide over 100 free spays/neuters for the animals in Craiova, Romania! This event, created by Sue Roberts, has completely funded an entire spayathon! Cheers to you Sue and to all those who donated for this amazing event! Thank you to Mayhew International and Mayhew Animal Home, UK, for sponsoring the printing of educational books (we now have distributed 13,000 throughout Romania!
B&G Martin, a new company created to benefit animal rescue, sponsored a spay/neuter event in Craiova in December. For every dog bed B&G Martin sells, a dog will be spayed or neutered with the proceeds. A big fan of RAR and ASNI, B&G Martin chose RAR to be the first recipient of their "giving back" program and hope to continue to build upon this partnership with more spay/neuter events in the future.
