Winter 2018

Dear Supporter

2017 Infographic of RAR's Work

2017 was another year of great achievements for Romania Animal Rescue and Animal Spay Neuter International.

With your help, we were able to open the Center of Hope Veterinary Clinic. This really is a dream come true and a major break through for animal welfare in Romania. In total we were able to provide veterinary care for 460 sick and injured animals. Many of these were stray dogs and cats who would not have received urgent life saving veterinary care without you.

One dog you provided life saving surgery for is Pistachio. He was found with two broken front legs. Pistachio had surgery on both legs and has been fostered by our Vet Tech Diana Wald and his legs monitored for the past few months. Pistachio has made a full recovery and we have now found him a forever home!

You also helped Mia. Who was found at the side of the road with life threatening injuries. Mia had emergency surgery for a diaphragmatic hernia as she was in danger of going into respiratory and metabolic failure. She also had to have one of her back legs amputated. She was given round the clock care by our Vet Dr. Ioana Preda. Mia made a full recovery and was adopted to a wonderful home in November, 2017.

Cat with injured leg

In 2017, we were able to spay and neuter 9,301 dogs and cats. This intervention has saved many thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens from a life of suffering.

The spay and neuter program benefited dogs, cats and communities across Romania with a total of 8,551 dogs and cats provided with this life changing veterinary procedure. Nearly 4,000 dogs and cats were spayed and neutered during mobile campaigns across Romania. Over 3,300 were sterilised at the new Center of Hope facilities and over 1,400 at our Craiova Clinic where we provide at least 100 free spay and neuter procedures every month.

We were also able to visit Bulgaria twice and spay and neuter 431 dogs and cats. Another project in Greece benefitted 121 dogs and cats.

Keyhole spay incision

Our highly skilled vets and vet techs provide the best quality veterinary care and use the most modern, minimally invasive surgical techniques to minimise pain for the animal and reduce recovery times. You can see from the photos, the quality of the surgery carried out by your team of vets.

Since 2004, with your support, we have spayed and neutered 62,628 dogs and cats.

Demand for us to visit communities and spay and neuter dogs and cats is growing and outstrips our current resources. The only constraint on our ability to increase this programme is funding. With no government support for this programme, we rely on you to help us to help dogs and cats in need.

Distributing education booklets

We distributed 500 education booklets to young people, held veterinary seminars and trained Romanian vets at the Center of Hope.

We started two new projects. The first is a spay and neuter program targeted at the thousands of dogs that live in the industrial areas around the busy ring road in Bucharest. Too many puppies are born in these factory yards and they are vulnerable to diseases and injuries. The best thing we can do is to reduce the suffering of unwanted puppies and improve the health of the existing population by catching the dogs and spaying and neutering as many as possible.

The second project is the new vaccination programme to help fight the spread of distemper, rabies and parvo virus and the unnecessary suffering that these deadly diseases cause. Nearly 200 dogs were vaccinated in the first few weeks of the program in the last few weeks of 2017. With your help we can grow these two important projects in 2018.

We receive no government funding. You really have made all of this work possible.

Thank you for your support in 2017. Without you, it would not have been possible to help the thousands of dogs and cats that have received life changing and life saving treatment. Please help us to help more animals in 2018.

Social Support

Thank you to everyone who has donated to help Gruia, the old stray dog that was brought over 100km to get help at Center of Hope / Romania Animal Rescue.

When Gruia arrived at the Center of Hope he was having trouble breathing, he was covered in ticks and fleas and he had complications from surgery he had already on his damaged eye. Gruia has now been stabilized. He has had surgery on his eye. All ticks and fleas have been removed and he's had a bath, probably the first bath this poor baby has ever had.

Gruia is about 10 years old and is very skinny. He's had a very tough life. He's getting good food. He's got a coat to keep him cozy after his wash and has a nice safe kennel of his own in which to sleep. He's still a bit nervous and probably has never been inside around humans like this before.

He still needs more veterinary treatment. If you would like to help this old boy get the care he deserves you can donate at .

The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded to the members of Independent Charities of America and Local Independent Charities of America that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, and program and cost effectiveness. These standards include those required by the US Government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, probably the most exclusive fund drive in the world.
